Microsoft’s VHD format can be used to collect an OS, high-level software and specific configuration details into a single package.

The VHD is a dubbed idea of virtualization leader VMware that always has commented that virtualization will ease up software installation.

Microsoft has released the VHD under Open Specification Promise and has announced the test run of the software on Monday.

XenSource,
which has developed the Xen virtualization software, announced the availability of the Windows version of the software in December. The application will be priced at $488 for the annual subscription and $750 for a perpetual license on a dual-socket server.
Also on Monday, VMware and VMLogix, a competing start-up, made separate announcements of products that use virtualization to aid software development.

Virtualization can be used to test numerous combinations of operating systems and higher-level software as the process is safe and does not damage the partition permanently.
