The US Army believes that Linux is the way to go as the OS for the service’s Future Combat System (FCS) program.



Maj. Gen. Charles Cartwright, the Army’s program manager for the FCS Brigade Combat Team, said; it said that it believes Linux running on Intel-based computers provides the best common operating environment and CPU for computers in FCS. The Linux-Intel solution works best with the service’s current and future applications.



The other major reason is an open source OS is customizable that can be done without sharing classified info about various things that would have otherwise gone into the companies (read Microsoft) peddling proprietary OS software.
