Initially the fifth version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux was scheduled to ship in December 2006, but later the company decided to postpone the release when they released the second beta version in November.
Now the company is sure that they will be able to ship the final gold version on February 28, 2007. The company has also commented that they were not able to ship the OS on the earlier release time as they wanted to ensure that the OS is fully loaded and debugged before it is shipped.
The main feature of the latest version of the OS will be the integration of Xen technology that will allow the users to run multiple OS on the same system in a virtual environment.
Microsoft is also working on a competitor virtualization technology code named Viridian. They have stated that they will be able to release the application within 6 months of the release of Longhorn Server.
The latest offering of Red Hat is based on the version 2.6.18 of the Linux kernel. This new OS will provide added security features. The major threat for Red Hat that is the entrance of Oracle in the Linux arena has not yet materialized.
