Researchers from Sydney have developed computer software that can assess the beauty of a female as soon as her face is fed into the system.

The beauty equation is based on 14 facial measurements and 13 related ratios. These are compared with the images of supermodels and then the system grades the face on a scale of one to ten.

The system is expected to find some application in entertainment industry, cosmetic industry and virtual media and plastic surgery.

Researchers divide the face into a series of measurements, such as the distance between the top of the face and the chin and many similar measurements.

When the results were compared by the results given by human volunteers then the system was found to give results with an error of plus or minus 1.5. Further development of the software is expected to reduce this error.

The developers of this software said that one danger of the software was that it could fall into the hands of adolescents or others sensitive about their looks and harm their self image.

Currently the software can only be used to grade a female face but soon men will also be able to determine their looks by the software.
