In a major move against the database giant named Oracle, MySQL has launched its first site-wide license and support package that is bearing exactly the same price as that of an Oracle CPU database license.
This new MySQL Enterprise Unlimited bears a price tag of $40,000 and offers 100 hours of free consultative support and monthly updates and service packs. On the other hand a similar offering from Oracle named Oracle Enterprise Edition processor license also costs exactly $40,000 with support and licensing starting at $8,800.
MySQL commented by saying that they are not only targeting Oracle but they also have Microsoft, Sybase and IBM Enterprise on their hit list. But if we consider the price tag we are pretty much sure that the main target of the company is Oracle.
More than 30% of Oracle customers are running MySQL and that makes the company take advantage. Oracle is also trying to woo customers by offering open source infrastructure software with maintenance offerings also in the package.
If we just talk about MySQL the company does not have a potential business compared to Oracle that the company can fear loosing. That means they have nothing to loose and can only benefit from the move.
