A few hours back I blogged about Microsoft being granted the 5,000th US patent. If you are curious to know on Microsoft got so many patents, then here is the list.
Some of the patents raise eyebrows like:
a) Template-based customization of a user interface for a messaging application program
b) Contact user interface
c) Generic parameterization for a scene graph
Rest assured, there are hundreds more like the ones above!

Software patents have had countless hardcomings and failures. The idea of ”accessing a HyperLink over a dailup connection” was once a patent. Many people had done it countless times before the patent was issued. Or is it similar to two issued patents for the LZW (GIF) compression? Or the MP3 scandal?
Software patents do not serve any point of optimism. They are often given to the incorrect holders. Many should not even exist. Because of these patents, many great projects, ideas, and developments are stalled
As the patents make the once great computer science even more comercial.
Software Patents should not exist.
