The Redmond giant will soon submit a new photo format to the international standard body.
This new format is renamed HD after the company initially named it to Windows Media Photo.
If everything goes according to the plans then we can see the end of the JPEG era.
The company has already incorporated the format in Windows Vista and Adobe Systems has also agreed to support the new format by releasing a plug-in for CS3 and CS2.
The format according to Microsoft provides better compression and the image quality is better than that in JPEG while the file size is half that in case of JPEG.
This new format will offer compression in both types that include lossless compression and lossy compression.
JPEG format was also kept up to date when it was upgraded to the latest JPEG 2000. Initially JPEG only offered lossy compression but in the latest version the technique was designed to support lossless compression as well.
Hopefully Apple will also follow the suit and provide support for the format.
