
Software giant Microsoft has released its Perst for one of its version of open source, .Net Compact Framework. The object oriented Perst embedded database system is especially for Microsoft’s smart device development framework.
The high performance and pure C# based Perst offers smaller footprint than the standard Perst embedded database to .NET Compact Framework. It offers compatibility with applications running on resource-constrained Microsoft Windows CE and Pocket PC based mobile phones, PDAs and smart phones. The company is also offering Perst as a part of its .NET distribution, that users can download for evaluation, without paying any charge and use under the General Public License (GPL). Microsoft is also selling Perst support as well commercial license for .NET.

Perst for .NET Compact Framework holds a common source code base and distribution inspite of running optimally in the compact subset of Microsoft’s .NET Framework. Perst for .NET enables developers for developing in both environments or migrating .NET applications to run in .NET Compact Framework. Perst for .NET offers many facilities, which are given below:
1) It offers multithreaded access, data encryption and an SQL subset to filter elements of any collection.
2) Its embedded database contributes as a valuable tool, which offers critical data management features.
3) It is based on C#, which makes it easy to work with the growing programming language.
4) Its inherent object-orientation increases developer productivity.
Users can even modify Perst database source code and use it in other open source applications under the GNU General Public License.
