Microsoft was forced to release an emergency software patch for a critical Windows flaw.

The vulnerability was about a bug in the way Windows processes .ani Animated Cursor files. The bug was being attacked by online criminals since last week.

Microsoft was forced for an early release as the attack was becoming too widespread.

Microsoft was notified about the flaw in December 2006, but the Redmond giant took long time in patching the vulnerability because the .ani flaw could effect other applications and required a great deal of testing.

This is the third such force released patch that Microsoft has delivered since January 2006.
