180507_39 Software giant, Microsoft has banned on wireless networking on Windows Home Server. It means that customers will be forced to run Ethernet cables to an adjacent router.

While answering the questions on the new operating system in a conference session at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, Microsoft Windows Home Server executive, Mark Russinovich, said that the new OS will be released. According to company officials, the new software would be sold to OEMs as well as to system builders and enthusiasts.

Microsoft executives are focused on advantages of the platform, not the limitations. The Windows Home Server only allows customers to file and operating systems back up through a feature, named, “Drive Extender,” which is software-based RAID implementation that can mirror files at the folder level. Users can also access files remotely via the web through a custom domain, which Microsoft will provide.

This is quite interesting that designers can not build Wi-Fi technology or even they can not use WHS as router on home gateway.

As part of an overview on the new OS, Microsoft’s executives revealed that the software is based on Windows Server 2003. The software creates a 20-Gbyte partition, which is used to install the OS as well as future updates when users will install the software. The software would be updated through Windows Update.

Microsoft has strictly banned Windows Home Servers to be connected through Ethernet. Since the company wanted to make it simple and company expects that their customers would have an empty RJ45 port on the back.

According to Charlie Kindel, general manager of Microsoft’s Windows Home Server, users would not be able to use the box as home gateway, sniffing traffic into the network and using the built-in firewall to block malicious traffic. The functionality is not included into Windows Home Server because primarily users have their own home gateways, which is more cheap and efficient.

Finally, Kindel has acknowledged that the design of the software and hardware did not allow for the fine-grained power management, which characterizes all laptops and most desktops.
