Downgrade.com has a very useful piece on how to make your Windows work as fast as the time you installed it. It has given half a dozen ways to make it happen.
1. Install Ad-Aware SE which will block and clean spyware in your machine. It’s one of the best anti-spyware program and is completely free
2. Keep your anti-virus software up to date and run and complete system scans.
3. Look at your sysTray which is in the area next to the clock in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Disable the ones you don’t need to be running uselessly.
4. Startup Items must be kept as minimum as possible. They hog memory for unnecessary reasons if you don’t have to use them. You can do by running ‘msconfig’ and unchecking the items on startup.
5. Run a scandisk going to My Computer, and right clicking on your C drive you will be shown a dialog box with a number of tabs. Go to the ‘Tools’ tab and start a scan disk. This will check your drive for file system errors and correct them.
6. Run a defrag after the machine returns from the scan disk in the same area run a defrag or ‘disk defragmentation’. It physically aligns all of your files in the proper order on your hard drive. This will create less drive-seek time when running programs or loading files. You can do this after a months usuage.
