Adobe is contributing some of the code behind its widely used Flash Player to Mozilla so that Mozilla can incorporate it in its upcoming version of Firefox.

The code covers the scripting language in Adobe’s Flash Player which it acquired from MacroMedia for $3.4 billion last year.

With the donation, Adobe has become the latest software company to support open-source software. Earlier Microsoft and Oracle had also announced expanded support of open-source software.

To manage the contributions from Adobe, Mozilla has started a new project named ‘Tamarin’. Both Adobe and Mozilla will jointly handle the project.

Adobe’s chief software architect said

‘By working with the open-source community we are accelerating the adoption of a standard language for creating and delivering richer, more interactive experiences that work consistently across PCs and mobile devices.’

The improved browser from Mozilla will be available in the first half of 2008.
